Carrownisky Strand

Carrownisky Strand is a very popular surfing beach as it provides one of the only consistent breaks in the area. The beach is a busy spot in the summer with families, walkers, swimmers, horse racers, and surfers, and other water sports enthusiasts. Carrownisky Strand is home to one of the first surf schools established in Ireland, SurfMayo, which is open seven days a week.

Clare Island

Clare Island lies off the Mayo coast at the entrance to Clew Bay. Its spectacular cliffs are home to large numbers of nesting sea birds and its hills, bogs and woodlands make it ideal for hill walking. The island's complex history can be read through its landscape: from archaeological remains of the Mesolithic, Neolithic and Bronze age, to rare medieval wall paintings in the 14th century abbey. One can view the castle and burial place of the famous 'pirate queen' Grace O'Malley's (Grainneuaile). The island population is now around 130, yet everywhere there are traces of past generations, most significantly the 19th century population explosion and subsequent famine when the island's population of 1600 was reduced by half. Old potato ridges, or 'lazy beds' are everywhere: the evening sun reveals them jutting out from the land like the rib cages of some dying beast. Clare Island's scenic beauty, pristine beaches, rare flora and gentle peak of Knockmore (461m) make it an ideal destination for walkers. Bring your walking boots and set out to the waymarked looped trails, look out for the Napoleonic signal tower which was built in 1804. Offshore, the clear waters surrounding the island are known for their exceptional dive sites.

An Bhinn Bhuí (Benwee Head)

A popular site for scuba divers, kayakers and nesting seabirds, the Stags of Broadhaven, a group of four steep and rocky islets rising to almost 100m are visible a short distance offshore of An Bhinn Bhuí. At approximately 13km long, the Head Loop is a spectacular walking trail which follows open bogland and sheep paths to grant access to dramatic cliffs with stunning ocean and expansive bog views. This route takes you past many sites of cultural, historical and environmental interest which include around the Ceathrú Thaidhg (Carrowteige) area and north Mayo’s living Gaeltacht.

Old Head Beach, Louisburgh

Old Head Beach, Louisburgh in County Mayo has Old Head woodland located approx 200m to the rear of Old Head Beach, Louisburgh. This is a Special Area of Conservation SAC with an extreme development of Atlantic oakwood. It is one of the only Irish sites where the habitat occurs directly adjacent to the coast. Activities enjoyed at Old Head Beach, Louisburgh include, swimming, surfing, water skiing, jet skiing, scuba diving, snorkelling and fishing. There are lifeguards on duty during the summer bathing season. The beach is also disabled friendly. For more information see the noticeboard at the beach.

Hennigan's Heritage Centre

Hennigan's Heritage Centre is situated in unspoilt countryside overlooking Creagaballa Lake 6.5km from the workhouse at Swinford where thousands of people from the region died during the 19th century due to starvation, and 20km from The Museum of Country Life, Turlough County Mayo. Hennigan’s Heritage Centre tells the story of the lives of local West of Ireland people over the past 200 years. Guided tours of this small holding are provided by Tom Hennigan who is the sixth-generation of his family to live here. See and hear how this family survived on less than ten acres of poor land for twenty decades. Information displays range from prehistoric to the 19th century land estates and tenants, through Independence and to present times. Working demonstrations of the implements on display plus archaeological tours of the surrounding historic area can also be be provided. Hennigan's Farm also features a lake, which is available for angling, and a picnic area.

Clare Island, Louisburgh

Clare Island, Louisburgh Beach in County Mayo is located very near Roonagh Pier. All boats arriving to the island must berth at this pier. Roonagh Pier is approx 6 miles from Louisburgh and 18 miles form Westport. Clare Island has a small population of approx 250 people. Lifeguards are not on duty during the summer bathing season but lifebuoys are provided on the beach.

Clogher Heritage Complex

The Clogher Heritage Complex, near Claremorris in County Mayo, consists of a typical one bedroom labourer's cottage and garden. Large families often lived in houses of this size, where typical features included a loft, which was used as an extra bedroom and a half door entrance, which also provided light and ventilation. Surrounding the cottage is a display of artefacts and old farm machinery which were donated by locals. The tranquil garden also features a picnic area, water feature and sundial while a re built forge stands within the grounds. This forge in Newtown, originally one of half a dozen working forges in the district, was in the Staunton family ownership since the 19th century. Restored in 2001, the forge contains original features such as bellows and an anvil. The Clogher Bog Loop walk, outlined in the Clogher Walks guidebook, starts at the heritage complex and can be done all year round.

Newport House Hotel Fishing Holidays

Newport House is a fine Georgian house and has enjoyed a colourful history, particularly since the earlier half of this century when it became a famous base for those fishing the great rivers of County Mayo. Newport House is one of those rare establishments which owns its own river, the Newport River as well as owning the rights to fish on Lough Beltra West. Newport is renowned for its salmon and sea trout and has a reputation for spring salmon. On both waters, the rule is fly only and open season for salmon is from 20 March to 30 September. Sea trout season runs from mid-June until 30 September.

Bertra Beach, Murrisk

Bertra Beach, Murrisk is a wide strand located approx 12km from Westport in County Mayo. It is mainly a sandy beach with some rocky stretches in the spring tide. There is a car park and toilet facilities are provided. The beach has lifeguards on duty during the summer bathing season. Turlough Park

Turlough Park House is a fine example of High Victorian Gothic architecture, set amidst 30 acres of spectacular gardens, parkland and woodland. The site is also home to a branch of the National Museum of Ireland where the National Folklife Collection is on permanent display. Built in 1865 and designed by the celebrated architect Thomas Newenham Deane, Turlough Park House was the ancestral home of the Fitzgerald family, who owned a large estate here from the mid 17th century. Garden features include an ornamental lake with islands, riverside walks, terraced lawns, art installations and woodland paths. The main focal point from the front of the house is a restored Victorian style glasshouse. A central path to the rockery is flanked by formal flower beds, surrounded by paths and lawns. A conservatory, which is a curvilinear lean-to on the stable wall, is an interesting period piece and indications are that it may be a Richard Turner. Facilities include toilets, parking, wheelchair access and restaurant. Group visits are welcome, through the bookings office.

Attymass Salmon Fishery

There is easy access to all the pools around the Attymass Angling Fishery, with ample car parking facilities for the visiting angler. The fishery consists of approximately 4 kms (2.5 miles) of single bank fishing, and is divided up into three distinct sections including three famous Moy pools, which are Padden's Pool, the Wood Pool and Cunningham's Pool.

Summer SUP School - Mayo

Summer SUP offers SUP lessons, rentals, summer camps, certificate courses and SUP tours. They also take groups of up to 16 people or more with notice. Summer SUP offers pop up events such as fitness classes, pilates and yoga, all on stand up paddle boards. Lessons are held at Old Head Beach, a unique location due to its east facing beaches on the Wild Atlantic Way. The beach is sheltered from the south and west and is therefore well suited for swimming and stand up paddling. Lifeguards are on duty through the summer months, the beach is accessible for wheelchairs, as are the toilets. There is a pier at the western end of the beach, sheltering a small anchorage popular with local sailors and fishermen. It is an area of outstanding views to Croagh Patrick and Clew Bay. Its combination of crystal clear water, white sandy beaches and micro climate makes it an ideal place for Stand Up Paddle Boarding. With Muirti and his instructors knowledge of the local waters, their passion for SUP and vast array of qualifications and experience your time with them will leave you thinking "Life is better on the water"

Rathfran Abbey

Rathfran Dominican Abbey, or Priory, was founded in 1274 by William de Burgh and his wife, Finola d'Exeter. The abbey showcases some beautiful architecture of its time, including exquisite lancet windows, tomb niches and stone slabs used as head stones with intricate and elaborate Celtic carvings. Today, many of the abbey's features are no more, including the cloisters, of which only the foundations are visible.
