Galway Tour Company - Connemara and Cong Tour

The Connemara & Cong Tour departs daily at 10am from the new Galway Coach Station. To see the hidden Ireland off the main tourist track this tour is a must with the first stop at Ross Errily Friary- a hidden but atmospheric 14th century monastery before entering Cong Village where you have time to explore Cong Woods to see Ashford Castle or stroll the town famous for being the location for the 1950s classic movie, 'The Quiet Man'- or simply have a coffee on the edge of Lough Corrib- the largest lake in the Republic of Ireland. Entering Connemara on the Lough Nafooey route allows you to see the stark beauty of the hidden valley of Connemara before arriving at the Atlantic Ocean and for hostellers there is an option to hop-off at Sleepzone Connemara. The tour then continues to Kylemore Abbey and a break for lunch and sightseeing for 1 hr 45 mins. Entrance into Kylemore Abbey & Gardens is not included in the tour price and is an optional fee. Leaving Kylemore late afternoon we pass through the Inagh Valley, Maam Cross & Oughterard and complete the circuit of Lough Corrib before arriving home to Galway City.

Galway's famous bustling market has been trading in the centre of Galway city, County Galway, for centuries. Visitors will find hundreds of stalls selling fresh produce and locally produced crafts. Inis Meáin (Inishmaan)

Said to be the most unchanged of the three Aran Islands, Inishmaan's 4km landscape has an exceptional range of flora, including orchids, cowslips, honeysuckle and more. Gurteen Beach

Two miles from Roundstone, Co Galway, on the road to Clifden, are two of the finest beaches in Ireland. Gurteen Beach and Dog’s Bay lie back to back forming a tombolo jutting out into the Atlantic Ocean. Gurteen Beach is the larger of the two beaches and is located closer to Roundstone village. The water here is crystal clear and it's used for swimming and other water based activities including windsurfing and kitesurfing. The beach is naturally protected by the headland which it faces to the south and this is a very popular destination for holidaymakers in the summer with wonderful walks and it's a great place to collect sea shells. Dogs Bay and Gurteen Bay make up one of the finest stretches of coastline in Connemara with uncompromising views of Errisbeg and the surrounding countryside. The beaches were formed by a sand spit and tombolo which now separates the two bays and their beaches. The area has international importance for its rare and interesting ecological, geological and archaeological features. The sand and grassland habitats are of particular interest as the sand on Gurteen Beach was not formed from the local limestone but rather from fragments of seashells of tiny sea creatures known as foraminifera. It is these seashells that give the sand a pure white colour. The grasslands, made up of machair vegetation are considered rare and found only on the west coast of Ireland and Scotland. The name Gurteen derives from the Irish Goirtín meaning 'small plot' or 'small field'.

Tuam Golf Club

Tuam Golf Club is a rural 18-hole course with fairways protected by tree plantations and greens that require careful navigation of bunkers. The course has undergone considerable redesign in recent years, challenging the low handicapper while being fair to the less gifted player. With a fairly flat layout, the course plays to a par of 72. The club was founded in 1904 and includes a clubhouse, incorporating a bar, restaurant, private visitor area, games room, professional shop, and changing rooms. The Irish Workhouse Centre

A real story, in a real workhouse. The story of the Irish workhouse is a sad yet little-known part of Ireland’s past. 163 workhouses were built in Ireland throughout history, the last resort of the destitute poor from the 1840s-1920s. The workhouse was a system of social welfare based on indoor relief. Entire families had to enter the workhouse together. To qualify for admission, people had to give up any land they had. On entering the workhouse, family members were split up into separate quarters, sometimes never to see each other again. Children aged 2 or younger could stay with their mothers, but young and old alike were expected to work. In return, the 'inmates' received enough food to survive. Life in the workhouse was harsh and disciplined. As an institution, the workhouse was despised. In particular, the conditions during the famine years remained in the memories of those who experienced it for generations. At the Irish Workhouse Centre, Portumna, you can get a real insight into what life in a workhouse was really like. All seven workhouse buildings are intact. Visitors enter via the waiting room – the actual room people came through when seeking admission to the workhouse. A short film is then shown in what was the girls’ classroom. After this, visitors are guided through the girls’ yard and the women’s dormitory block, including the matron’s quarters, the nursery, the women’s workroom and the laundry. The centre is a work-in-progress, so visitors also have the opportunity to learn about ongoing conservation and restoration work.

Loughrea Cathedral

St. Brendan’s Catholic Cathedral in Loughrea, County Galway was completed in 1902. Though the structure’s only unusual architectural features are the double transepts, the splendid decoration of its interior makes it worth a visit. The cathedral features stained glass from influential studio An Túr Gloine, including Michael Healy’s 'Ascension and Last Judgment' of 1936-40. There is also a statue of the virgin and child by John Hughes, bronze angels by Michael Shortall, and metalwork by William Scott, which was admired by poet T.S. Eliot. In addition, the small museum on the grounds contains a fascinating collection. The Clonfert Diocesan Museum collection includes a number of chalices dating from the 15th to 18th century, vestments from the same period, medieval carved wooden figures and banners or hangings produced by the Dún Emer Guild, some of which were designed by Jack B. Yeats.
