Shuttle Knit

Shuttle Knit is located in the Wicklow Travellers’ state of the art training centre ‘CEART’ in Wicklow town. Shuttle Knit was established in 1992 by Wicklow Travellers’ Group Limited (WTGL), a community development organisation. The group is committed to securing human rights for Travellers and responding to the needs of Travellers in County Wicklow. Through WTGL, the need for training, development and employment opportunities for Traveller women in the area was identified. Visitors are always welcome and can view the knitting in operation and products on display. The woollen handcraft for sale includes beautiful ponchos, hats and scarves. New designs are created each season giving Shuttle Knit a competitive edge. Work is showcased at national craft fairs and retail outlets throughout Ireland and also available on site. If you are shopping in Wicklow town or visiting the historic gaol, you are very welcome to Shuttle Knit to see the beautiful range of garments.

West Wicklow House

Located in Blessington, County Wicklow, West Wicklow House dates back to the 1800s. It was originally built as an inn for stagecoaches – a resting point for horses and weary travellers. With its long bar, generous intimate corners and spacious eating areas, West Wicklow House boasts fair prices in drinks and food, with a warm welcome for everyone. Outside there is a sheltered beer garden with solid Swedish fallen oak tables and benches constantly used winter and summer, flanked with rows of bamboo and baskets bursting with colourful flowers. Parnell National Memorial Park

Parnell National Memorial Park has a beautiful bronze statue to commemorate Charles Stewart Parnell (1846-1891), one of the greatest political leaders in Irish history. Also found here is the Feagh McHugh O'Byrne Commemorative Stone, remembering another Wicklow native who influenced the course of Irish history. The tall granite slab erected to his memory comes from Fraughan Rock Glen in Glenmalure, County Wicklow, where he had a famous victory over Crown forces in 1580. Continue your journey and visit Avondale Forest Park nearby, the birthplace and much loved home of Charles Stewart Parnell.

The Dower House Gardens

Dower House gardens were laid out towards the end of the 19th Century with plantings of many fine specimens including Rhododendron arboretum, Magnolia soulangeana 'Alba' and Camellia japonica. Also included are a number of specimen mature trees, including a fine Chilean myrtle, Luma apiculata, planted c.1880. recently a white garden has been created together with a wild meadow which reaches its peak in mid June. Described as one of 'Wicklow's finest gardens' (Jane Powers, Gardening correspondent, the Sunday Times) the gardens are open each year in aid of The Wicklow Hospice. There is parking and parts of the garden are accessible to wheelchairs. No dogs, picnics or prams are allowed and children must be supervised.

The Happy Pear

Courtown Beach

Courtown Beach is located approximately 6 kilometres south east of Gorey. Coastal erosion has depleted the beach significantly around the village so access and lifeguards have been moved northwards to cater for the crowd concentrations. The beach is made up of fine sand and has extensive coastal protection works all along the boundary between the dunes/woodland and the beach itself. The village of Courtown is located around a harbour and canal system. The beach itself is relatively narrow around the main access points but expands in width the further north you travel. Lifeguards are on duty during the summer months and more information can be found on the notice boards located at the beach.

Powerscourt Waterfall

Powerscourt Waterfall is a beautiful natural attraction set in the foothills of the Wicklow Mountains near the town of Enniskerry. Only 5km from Powerscourt House and Gardens, the waterfall is Ireland’s highest at 121m and has attracted visitors for over 200 years. Driving from the gate lodge towards the waterfall, visitors are surrounded by beech, oak, larch and pine trees, some of which were planted over 200 years ago. There are giant redwood or sequoia trees, native to California, that were planted at Powerscourt sometime after 1860. Powerscourt Waterfall, which flows into the Dargle River, is a haven for wildlife. The 7th Viscount Powerscourt established a deer park and in 1858 successfully introduced the Japanese Sika deer to the estate. Birdwatching enthusiasts will be on the lookout for some of the locals, the chaffinch, cuckoo, raven and the willow warbler. The waterfall is a favourite destination for family picnics and visitors are also welcome to enjoy a barbecue. There is a vast amount of space to keep children entertained and a playground for younger children at Powerscourt Waterfall, one of County Wicklow’s most beautiful natural attractions.

Great Sugar Loaf Mountain

The Great Sugarloaf (Ó Cualann also Beannach Mhór) is 4km west of Kilmacanogue, Co Wicklow and is set apart from the Wicklow Mountains, with its conical shape and broody demeanour the Great Sugar Loaf makes an instant impression. It's barely 501 metres tall, but this plucky hill is one of Ireland's most iconic peaks. The Sugar Loaf may have the appearance of an extinct volcano; it is in contrast to the granite mountains to the south and west, a quartzite hill. On a clear day you can see not only Dublin City and the Wicklow Mountains, but Snowdonia in Wales. It's hugely popular outing for Dublin day trippers. If you're reasonably fit and don't mind a bit of scrambling on the rocky final stretch, you can be up and back from the summit in little over an hour (access is to the south along the L1031).

Blessington Lakes Golf Club

Blessington Lakes Golf Club is set in the panoramic setting of Boystown in the heart of the Wicklow countryside. Formerly known as Boystown Golf Club, it was established by the McEvoy Family in 1997. Built on naturally rolling farmland the design takes advantage of the existing waterways and mature trees. Blessington Lakes Golf Club was affiliated to the GUI in 1998 and currently has 300 members who range from all around Dublin, Wicklow and Kildare. The course is situated just south of Blessington approximately 11km from Co Dublin. The course is suitable for all levels of golfers but offers an interesting challenge to the more seasoned golfer as it measures just shy of 7,000yd of the medal tees.

Killruddery House & Gardens

Killruddery House & Gardens in County Wicklow is nestled between the mountains and the sea, and is one of the great historic houses of Ireland. The magnificent 800 acre estate includes flowering woodland, painterly formal 17th century gardens, a high hedge sylvan theatre, long ponds and a walled garden. It is also a member of HHI, Historic Houses of Ireland. The gardens at Killruddery House & Gardens are some of the oldest surviving examples of the original 17th century style, although there have been 18th and 19th century additions to the gardens. Killruddery House & Gardens offer garden admission and house tours. However, the team continues to protect Killruddery House & Gardens soul and unique character as a special family home. A French landscape architect named Bonet, a pupil of André Le Nôtre, was known to have been employed by the Earl of Meath in 1682, and within the formal gardens of the estate, visitors will find beautiful planting and wooded areas, water features and distinctive outdoor rooms. Architecturally, one of the most eye catching elements of Killruddery House & Gardens is the Orangery, designed and built by William Burns in 1852 and inspired by the style of the Crystal Palace in London. Legend has it that the family tiara was sold to finance this work and that the crenellations surrounding the dome were based on the design of this tiara. Today, three generations of the Brabazon family live in the 17th century house and estate, under the stewardship of Lord and Lady Ardee. Killruddery House & Gardens has been transformed into a cultural highlight and visitor attraction in Ireland’s Ancient East. A true celebration of the great outdoors, the authentic, bio-diverse space that makes up the estate comprises of a working farm. Black Castle Wicklow

The Black Castle ruin stands on a rocky headland over the sea. There is a fine vantage point for views over the town and the coast of North Wicklow from the ruins. The Vikings were extremely active in the Wicklow Town area from around 795 and in 834 they plundered the Monastery at Glendalough. In the same year they fortified a strategic rocky promonatory at the mouth of the Vartry River in Wicklow town. A castle was subsequently built now known as the Black Castle. There is no mention of the Castle in recorded history until 1174, following the Norman invasion. Between 1295 and 1315 the Castle was attacked and burnt down twice by the local O' Byrne Clan.

The trail then leads to the top of Carrickgollogan forest where there are amazing views of South Dublin coast and county all the way to North Wicklow County and coast line. The Mottee Stone

The Mottee Stone in County Wicklow is signposted on the Avoca-Rathdrum Road just beyond the "Meeting of the Waters". Go up a trackway to the summit of hilltop. The Mottee Stone probably derives its name from the French word 'Moitie', meaning half lying as it does halfway between Wexford and Dublin. Legend suggests that Fionn MacCumhaill hurled the stone from the top of Lugnaquilla Mountain. However, geologists would suggest that it is one of many erratic boulders that were carried in the great ice flows of the ice age and then deposited as the ice melted. If you visit please note that the huge granite boulder is clearly of a different type of rock to the surrounding copper bearing schists. According to local tradition, such boulders were once commonplace but a zealous clergyman blew up many in the 17th century, who believed that they encouraged paganism.

Avondale House and Forest Park

Explore the historic 18th century Avondale House that celebrates the heritage of the Parnell family near Rathdrum in County Wicklow. Take a step back in time, where local guides will share intriguing stories of the history of the Avondale estate on a guided tour of Avondale House. Samuel Hayes inherited the Avondale estate from his father in the late 1700s and is centrally important to the story of Avondale because he was so deeply interested in forestry. He planted over 8,000 trees from all over the world in Avondale, which would eventually mature into an impressive forest, with some of those trees still thriving today. When Charles Stewart Parnell inherited Avondale, and all its debt, he began developing the sawmills, and added quarrying and mining to his timber interests. Having to manage the financial difficulties of the estate shaped the way he thought about landowners and tenants in Ireland. He saw that the system needed to change and during his later political career he focused on fighting for land reform and Irish self government. The Great Tree Experiment began in Avondale in 1905. The idea was to see which trees would grow well in Ireland and would then be used to plant the new forests of Ireland. Generations of Irish foresters trained at Avondale and the experimental plots they planted still inform how we manage and care for trees today. Visitors can either prebook tickets on the website or purchase tickets on the day at the visitor centre, subject to availability. The guided tour is suitable for children aged eight years and up. Entry to the Seed Café, Walled Garden and Coillte Pavilion in Avondale is free of charge.
