Ballyscanlon Forest

Ballyscanlon Forest is located in Fenor, the getaway to the Copper Coast UNESCO Global Geopark. The Comeragh Mountains and Monavillagh form a distant back-drop. There are walking trails that vary in length from three to 4km. The fauna includes foxes, badgers, rabbits, some hares, red squirrels and many types of bird life. Facilities include a car park, picnic site, forest and lakeside walks. The main tree species are Sitka spruce, lodgepole pine and Norway spruce. Furze, woodrush and bilberry thrive on the woodland floor while lichens, mosses and saxifrage grow on the rocky ridges along the area. The Waterford Copper Coast is a designated UNESCO Global Geopark. The Copper Coast gets its name from the 19th Century copper mines that lie at its heart. It comprises some 25 kilometres of spectacular coastline consisting of scalloped beaches and coves buttressed and enclosed by rocky headlands. Oceans, volcanoes, deserts and ice sheets all combined to create the rocks, which provide the physical foundation of the natural and cultural landscapes of the Copper Coast.

Waterford County Museum

Waterford County Museum is located in a heritage building on St Augustine Street, Dungarvan, County Waterford. The museum showcases the history of Dungarvan and district, and features displays on topics such as archaeology, maritime, World Wars 1 and 2, The Big House, sport, the War of Independence, and much more. The Big House exhibition features paintings, drawings, photographs, vintage clothing, and links to West Waterford’s rich heritage of big houses such as Dromana, Lismore Castle and Cappoquin. In the sports exhibition area, learn about Ireland’s first cycling club founded in 1869 and see the Challenge Cup, awarded to the winner of Ireland’s first cycle race. In the archaeology exhibition learn about Dungarvan Castle, the Anglo Norman Motte at Gallowshill, and the Dungarvan Valley Caves. Replica artefacts are freely available to be handled by the visitor and children are especially encouraged to handle the objects in the children’s area.

Blackwater Eco Tours

The River Blackwater is designated a special area of conservation and is home to several species including kingfishers, otters and peregrine falcons. The Irish Handmade Glass Company - Kite Design Studios

After the closure of the Waterford Crystal factory in Waterford City, a group of Master craftsmen, with a combined total of over 150 years experience in glass making, came together and made the decision to set up a glass making facility of their own in the very heart of Waterford City. Located in the Kite Design Studio, The Irish Handmade Glass Company aims to bring the craft of glass making to life for visitors to the historic Henrietta Street area in the Viking Quarter of Waterford City. They aspire to create beautiful, affordable glassware, both crystal clear and coloured, which is not only pleasing to the eye, but also practical to use. In these modern times the vast majority of glass making companies now use automation to produce their products. At The Irish Handmade Glass Company, all of their products have been hand made on their premises. Their glass is a non lead based crystal, ‘Crystalline’, which is melted from its pellet form in their purpose built furnace, which produces 175kg of glass per day. They welcome visitors to their studio to experience their craft and see first hand how glass is formed in the traditional way. Visitors are welcome to interact with the craftsmen while they work, and any questions are welcome.

St Carthage's Cathedral Lismore

St Carthage’s Cathedral in Lismore, County Waterford, stands on a site of worship dating back to 635 AD, when St Carthage founded a major monastic settlement there. The present cathedral reflects centuries of rebuilding, with significant work from the 17th century onwards, including architectural work by William Robinson and the Pain Brothers. Inside are medieval tombs, a vaulted chancel roof, elaborately carved stonework, stained glass windows by Edward Burne-Jones and the McGrath tomb. The cathedral hosts regular services, cultural events and the Blackwater Valley Opera Festival each summer. Admission is free, with donations welcome in support of the ongoing restoration fund.

Ballynamona Court Cairn

Ballynamona Court Cairn in County Waterford is the only court cairn in the southeast. The name comes from the fact that this type of tomb usually has a courtyard area found at the entrance to the chambers. Of the court -originally 7 metres wide and 6 metres deep - only a few of the large orthostats remain, but the gallery, on the other hand, is well preserved. The entrance is marked by two very small jambs set inside the front edges of the wall slabs which form the gallery. A single slab divides the gallery into two separate chambers.

Barron’s Bakery and Coffee House

Barron’s Bakery and Coffee House in Cappoquin is probably the oldest bakery in Ireland. One thing’s for sure, there’s not another which has the original Scotch brick ovens that bake the really special kind of bread this bakery is famous for. The bakery employs the same traditional bread making methods used since it was opened in 1887 by the present owner's grandfather, John Barron. The pretty café and bread counter, is packed to the brim with loaves, cakes, tarts, gateaux and all manner of good things. Each day, a simple menu is displayed on the counter. There is always a fresh soup on offer. You'll also find home spun hot main courses like home chicken pie, bacon pie and courgette quiche, served with salad and a choice of sandwiches and filled blaas. Sweets include the divine Barron’s bread and butter pudding, pear and almond tart and continental style apple strudel, or any of the buns and pastries on display. Dungarvan Harbour Sailing Club, overlooks the harbour in Dungarvan, County Waterford, on the south east coast of Ireland, approximately mid way between Cork and Rosslare Harbours. Dunhill Castle

The la Poer family built the Dunhill castle in the early 1200’s. There is some evidence of an earlier Celtic fort on the hilltop also. The town's name is derived from the Irish translation of the fort of the rock. The impressive silhouette comprises only about half a fifteenth century tower with bits of outer walls dating to the early thirteenth century. Between the castle and church would have stood the medieval village of Dunhill which was basically a string of wooden houses. Attached to the front of the church was a small tower in which the priest lived. The castle had an interesting and chequered history. The la Poer’s (Power) of Dunhill were infamous in the 14th century, as they launched many attacks on Waterford City. In 1345 they destroyed the area around city but were counter-attacked, taken prisoner and hanged. The remaining members of the Power clan join forces with the O’ Driscoll family. This alliance would attack Waterford many times over the next 100 years, with both success and failure. After a defeat in Tramore in 1368 the castle passed to the Powers of Kilmeaden. It remained in their control until the Cromwellian attack on Dunhill and its first capture (legend of gunners and buttermilk) in 1649. Once regarded as impregnable, the castle was besieged and sacked, with the outer defences destroyed as well as tower beside the church. Fate of last Lord of Dunhill and Kilmeaden, John Power, and his family were unknown. The Castle and lands were then given to Sir John Cole with the church given to Waterford Corporation. Cole and his decedents never lived in the castle and the church was disused, with the result that timbers rotted and both fell into ruins during the 1700’s. More deterioration was recorded in 1912 when the east wall of the castle collapsed during a storm.

Some of the characters that come to life are Anastasia Fleming and Thomas Francis Meagher. The stories take you through the history and heritage of Waterford City, Ireland’s oldest city.
