Mo Chara

Mo Chara, which means my friend in Irish, is still occasionally used around Dundalk, County Louth as a casual greeting. This became the perfect name for a pub started by old friends, to make loads of new ones. From the beginning, the plan was to create a spot where folks could come together and celebrate the thinkers, doers and local legends of the town. Mo Chara hosts all kinds of events, from packed Sunday markets with local craft vendors to comedy nights and pop up kitchens run by some of the best chefs in Ireland. They serve their own stubby beer and on occasion, have secret gigs by well known Irish bands. Whether it's coffee and sandwiches by day or pizza and pints by night, there's always something happening at Mo Chara's.

Blackrock Promenade

The sea wall was built in 1851. The two walled promenade was a feature of Blackrock for over a century. One wall fronted the strand, while the other faced the street. The wall rendered the main street much narrower than it is today. In 1952, the inner wall was removed and the street widened in order to cater for the increasing number of motor cars coming into use. The promenade wall was completely refurbished in 2001 by Blackrock Tidy Towns and Louth County Council. The wall is exceptional in both its proximity to the main beach and because of its in-built seat provides a beautiful free facility for all to avail.

Carlingford Castle

County Louth is home to an atmospheric landmark, Carlingford Castle, on the southern shores of Carlingford Lough. Built by Hugh de Lacy, this dramatic fortress offers stunning views across the Lough towards the Mourne Mountains and legend has it that King John stayed here for three days in 1210 AD. The original castle consisted of an enclosed courtyard with two rectangular towers at the entrance and two storey buildings within. The eastern half of the castle was added in 1261 AD and included a number of rooms and probably a great hall. There were a number of alterations made to the castle over the centuries. The tower house was constructed in two phases, with the older portion completed in the early 16th century. The annex was most likely built around 50 years later to provide more living accommodation and was owned by the Earl of Carlingford, Nicholas Taaffe. Carlingford Castle appears to have remained in English hands during the post-medieval period. Hugh O'Neill, Earl of Tyrone, tried to take the castle in a surprise attack in 1596 and the fortress changed hands several times over the following centuries. It also functioned as a hospital during the period leading up to the Battle of the Boyne. Visit this formidable fortress to see an authentic piece of Irish history. Long Acre Alpacas

At Long Acre Alpacas there is an opportunity to get up close and personal with the curious Alpacas. There are six Alpacas that love to be accompanied on trek through the “great bog of Ardee”. This is the most easterly raised bog in Ireland and home to some wonderful flora and fauna. The Alpaca Experience involves a meet and greet with the boys, an explanation on how to handle them on the walk and a brief introduction to the world of Alpacas. The trek itself takes approximately 40 minutes with lots of photo opportunities along the way. It is finished off by putting the Alpacas back in their paddock and hand feeding them some treats, followed by some light refreshments for the humans. A meet and greet option is also offered for those unable to complete the trek.

County Museum Dundalk

County Museum Dundalk is a fascinating historical resource located in the town of Dundalk, County Louth. Funded by Dundalk Town Council, the museum opened in 1994 and offers an extensive programme of permanent exhibitions, temporary displays, drama presentations, lectures and film. The museum celebrates the story of County Louth’s rich, social, industrial and cultural history from the Stone Age up to the present day, over three exhibition galleries. Bringing history to life, the museum boasts a fine 72-seater theatre in which visitors can view a short film introducing the attractions of County Louth or enjoy a concert with summer recitals. The museum also holds a variety of travelling exhibitions, lectures and workshops at various times throughout the year.

Fiddle Case Pier at Drogheda Port

Fiddle Case Pier is the new dedicated yacht mooring in the heart of the historic town of Drogheda Co. Louth. The 40 meter pier has been designed for yachts and small leisure craft. It is ideally situated on the north side of the river Boyne, 400 meters upstream of the Boyne Viaduct just past the towns’ commercial shipping quays. Fiddle Case Pier provides an ideal maritime access to counties Louth & Meath taking in the treasure trove that is the Boyne Valley region. Drogheda is an ideal base from which to explore and learn more about the nearby attractions at Newgrange, Oldbridge, Mellifont Abbey, Monasterboice, and Slane Castle. Wander through time, Ancient gates and walls, passage tombs, monastic ruins, battlegrounds and big houses, family fun, culture, adventure and enjoy the buzzing nightlife!The riverside Scotch Hall shopping centre is close by for shopping and all supplies in addition to a platter of local restaurants and the four star D hotel. Also within walking distance is the central bus station, rail station, tourist office, Millmount museum and Highlanes art gallery. Charts BA 44 & 1431 Drogheda town lies 7km inland of the sea on the river Boyne. The navigation channel extends seaward 700mts from the breakwaters and the river is entered from the east in the white sector (269.5 -270.5degrees) of the port approach light (53 43.30N 006 14.72W). The southern breakwater end (53 43.24N 006 14.26W) is marked with a red metal tower Lyons Light, and the north breakwater end (53 43.36N 006 14.33W) is marked with a 20m stone beacon Aleria. In passing between the breakwaters the centre line of the channel should be maintained passing between paired timber navigation beacons (lateral) at frequent intervals to the town of Drogheda. The channel is maintained to a depth of -2.2mtrs Chart Datum to the Tom Roes Point terminal (53 43.25N 006 18.32W) and thereafter at -1.3m Chart Datum to the town of Drogheda. Drogheda is a tidal port and tidal predictions may be affected by weather conditions particularly easterly winds and high barometric pressure. Prolonged rainfalls may create strong continuous ebb flows of freshwater against a rising tide. The mean spring range is about 4.2m and the mean neap range 2.3m. The Boyne Viaduct cross the river at the entrance to the town of Drogheda and has vertical clearance of 26m at HAT. On the north side of the river, 400mts upstream of the Boyne Viaduct and past the commercial shipping quays a new dedicated yacht mooring the Fiddle Case Pier has been developed in 2017. The 40mtr pier is an open pile structure with vertical timber fenders at 3mtr centres and access ladders designed for yachts and small leisure craft. Potable water is available on the pier, no power.

St Laurence's Gate - Drogheda Walls

St Laurence's Gate, in Drogheda County Louth, is widely regarded as one of the finest of its kind in Europe. It consists of two lofty circular towers, connected together by a wall, in which there is an archway. Visitors can appreciate the spectacular dimensions of the mediaeval walls south of the gate at Featherbed Lane. Drogheda's name derives from the Irish 'Droichead Átha', meaning bridge of the ford which refers to the River Boyne on which it stands. Drogheda was granted its charter in 1194 by Hugh de Lacy (after whom the de Lacy bridge in Drogheda is named). The Anglo Normans made Drogheda one of their primary strongholds, completing the town walls in 1334. The walled area of the Mediaeval Drogheda enclosed one hundred and thirteen acres, making it one of the largest walled towns of the time. Twice the walls and gates of Drogheda held strong against invasion, firstly when Edward Bruce attacked the town in 1317 and again in 1642 when Sir Phelim O'Neill attempted to take Drogheda. In 1649, Cromwell breached the walls and sacked the town, massacring two thousand Royalist sympathisers and deporting captives as slaves to Barbados. Drogheda surrendered to King William after the Battle of the Boyne.

Clogherhead

The fishing village of Clogherhead is located on the east coast of Ireland in the County of Louth, approximately 70km north of Dublin. The headland affords uninterrupted views of the Cooley and Mourne Mountains 30km to the north and to Lambay Island 35km to the south. It is a preferred location for all types of water activities including, kitesurfing, rock pooling, surfing, sailing, swimming, walking, fishing and windsurfing. Clogherhead village is in close proximity to the historic town of Drogheda, the Boyne Valley and Newgrange. The village developed around the fishing industry with the waters of Clogherhead reputed as being some of the best fishing waters in the country. The harbour, known as Port Oriel was built in 1885. The beach has easy access to a long stretch of sand which is backed by dunes protected under the habitats directive. Clogherhead beach has a lifeguard on duty during the bathing season. Lifeguard patrol times are posted on the information noticeboard at the beach.

Townley Hall Woods

Built in 1799, the house is not open to the public. However, Townley Hall Woods feature a pleasant walking trail which ushers visitors through an area steeped in history, while providing lovely views of the Boyne. The Woods are close to the site of the Battle of the Boyne, which saw the Protestant King William III (also known as 'William of Orange’)and his father-in-law, Catholic King James II, fight for control of England, Scotland and Ireland (1st July 1690). The trail takes visitors through ‘King William’s Glen’, where the ultimately victorious Williamite troops, all 36,000 of them, along with their hospital, stores, wagons and thousands of horses, set up camp and from where King William launched his surprise attack on the troops of his father in law. The woodlands were planted around 150 to 200 years ago. Trees are mainly oak, beech, ash, sycamore, European silver fir and scots pine. Flora includes blackthorn, holly, hazel, elder, ground ivy, briar and several varieties of broadleaf woodland. The forest is home to red deer, red and grey squirrel, badger, rabbit, hare and fox. An Táin Arts Centre

An Táin Arts Centre is an independent arts space in Dundalk, County Louth, based in the former Táin Theatre, Town Hall, Crowe Street. Dundalk is a market town situated along Ireland’s Ancient East, that has a rich cultural heritage that dates to at least 3500 BC. An Táin Arts Centre derives its name from the Táin Bó Cúailnge or the Cattle raid of Cooley, a legendary story from early Irish literature, which is said to have taken place in the nearby Cooley Penninsula. An epic tale of war, it tells the story of Queen Medbh of Connacht who declares war on Ulster and tries to steal the famous stud bull Donn Cúailnge, but is opposed by warrior, Cúchulainn, who defends Ulster at all costs. Supported by Louth County Council, An Táin Arts Centre houses a 350 seater main theatre, a 55 seater studio theatre, a visual arts gallery and two workshop spaces. The programme includes a diverse collection of local arts, national tours, workshops, exhibitions and in house productions.

The Gastro Lounge at Scholars Townhouse Hotel is set in a restored 1867 Victorian townhouse, previously resided by Drogheda's Christian Brother Community. The craft beer is well integrated into the menu in the form of O'Haras beer battered cod. The smoking area is decorated nicely and is a regular haunt of Drogheda's Cigar club. The piano is available for anybody that can master it and it creates an excellent atmosphere, otherwise there are well selected playlists with any particulars available upon request. The local area is steeped in history with Drogheda the Gateway to the Boyne Valley surrounded by Newgrange, the Battle of the Boyne site at Oldbridge, Millmount Tower and St Lawrence's Gate. Taxis, a bus station and a train station are all within five minutes walking distance and retail outlets are not in short supply.

Ardee Golf Club

Situated in the heart of County Louth, only 45 minutes from Dublin, 15 minutes from Dundalk and less than half an hour from Newry, Ardee Golf Club is one of the premier golf courses in the North East.
