Have you ever stood on a quiet bridge, camera in hand, heart full — just waiting for a story to roll past on two wheels? That was me, somewhere near Tipperary, squinting into the spring sun, waiting for the magic of the Sean Kelly Three Counties Cycle to rush by.

As a member of the Limerick Camera Club, I was lucky enough to be invited to photograph this soulful escape of an event — a ride that stretches through the beating green heart of Limerick, Clare, and Tipperary.
A Morning of Talent and Legends
It all began at TUS College in Limerick, with morning coffee in one hand and camera in the other.

Cyclists buzzed around like excited bees, and there was an air of anticipation that even the clouds didn’t dare disrupt.

Sean Kelly himself, a cycling legend whose name rings like poetry on Irish roads, awarded young talent before leading the crowd — a moment both humbling and historic. Watching him speak with quiet power reminded me: some legends don’t shout, they ride.
Through the Lens and Into the Wind
As the cyclists took off, I clicked away — capturing everything from eager first-timers to weathered wheels carrying stories from past rides. Faces lit with laughter, determination, and in some cases, nerves.

Then, I swapped shutter speed for speed limits — hopping into my car to follow the 50km route. Fields blurred past. Potholes dodged. And all the while, I could feel the pulse of something bigger — community, cause, and camaraderie.
I stopped near a bridge just past the halfway mark — a perfect vantage point. As the peloton approached, there it was: the sound of gears, the rustle of jerseys, the unspoken symphony of movement.

More Than a Ride: A Mission with Heart
At its core, this cycle isn’t just about distance — it’s about difference. Every pedal turn supports Down Syndrome Limerick (DSL), a cherished charity that wraps its arms around children and adults with Down Syndrome.

Based in Castletroy, DSL offers everything from speech therapy to adult education and joyful social activities like music therapy and Zumba. The funds raised through this event fuel programs that empower, heal, and open doors.
Isn’t it remarkable what one extra chromosome can teach the world about patience, joy, and perseverance?
The Man Behind the Mission: Sean Kelly
If you’ve never heard of Sean Kelly (though I doubt that if you’ve ever passed a bike shop in Ireland), let me paint a quick picture. A legend born in Carrick-on-Suir, Sean’s career boasts 193 professional victories. Tour de France stages, Paris–Nice wins, and a slew of one-day classics — the man’s a monument on two wheels.
Yet despite his fame, Sean shows up for events like these — quietly, faithfully, fully present. That’s heroism.

For Cyclists of All Stripes
With both 50km and 100km routes, this event is genuinely book smart — tailored to include everyone from gentle joy-riders to Lycra-clad pros.
Thinking of joining next year? Bring your bike, your heart, and maybe a friend or two. Limerick, Clare, and Tipperary will greet you with open roads and open arms.

Final Click: A Moment to Remember
As the last cyclist disappeared down the tree-lined path, I lowered my camera and just… breathed. The bridge was still. The wind paused. I felt connected — to a cause, to a community, to the beauty of doing something meaningful with your weekend.

Have you ever found yourself unexpectedly part of something bigger? Something that stays with you long after the wheels stop spinning?
